These are the precise words we exchanged not five minutes ago:<\/p>\n

Isaiah: (Hollering from downstairs.) “Grandpa!”<\/p>\n

Me: “What?”<\/p>\n

Isaiah: “Can we take the dogs for a walk and maybe go around the block or down to the park? I’m just asking.”<\/p>\n

I half hear him, half-think for only a moment.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Me: “Maybe. That sounds like a good idea. Let me finish a couple of things. Then I’ll think about it.”<\/p>\n

Isaiah: (Still downstairs) “Okay. I love you!”<\/p>\n

Me: (Mindlessly, back to my writing) “I love you, too.”<\/p>\n

Isaiah: “I’m saying that because I want to convince you to take the dogs for a walk. (slight pause) But also because I really do love you.”<\/p>\n

And so it begins.<\/p>\n
