You don\u2019t notice because it happens gradually.<\/p>\n<p>One thing you do notice is suddenly being ignored. You notice because it seems to happen overnight. One day you\u2019re a vital part of society and respected leader in your industry, the next day people merely nod at you with a perfunctory smile as if you were a greeter at Walmart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">This only happens with people who didn\u2019t know you when you were young. Unfortunately, over time that seems to be most people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">Several years ago I mentioned this to my son\u2019s mother-in-law, Gloria, a dear friend who is a bit older and very wise. I told her I was frustrated because my experience and knowledge of my business had always been sought by my colleagues but suddenly nobody seems to have any interest in what I think.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\u201cYou\u2019ve reached the age of irrelevance,\u201d she explained matter-of-factly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">I had to let that sink in for a moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">The age of irrelevance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">Gloria could see I was stunned.\u00a0 \u201cIt happens to all of us,\u201d she said gently. \u201cI used to be the person my managers turned to for ideas. Then one day they weren\u2019t interested in any of my observations or suggestions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">I didn\u2019t know what to say. It made no sense and yet this is exactly what I was experiencing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">\u201cIt\u2019s like when your kids are growing up,\u201d Gloria continued. \u201cThey rely on you for everything and then one day they suddenly don\u2019t need you at all. You\u2019re irrelevant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">Nobody ever warned me this would happen. I don\u2019t like it but I\u2019ve come to accept it philosophically, if not quite emotionally. It still hurts a bit. I feel kind of useless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">Irrelevant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_8\">It\u2019s been a few years since Gloria explained to me this particularly jarring bump on the road of life.
