{"id":935,"date":"2009-11-29T15:08:52","date_gmt":"2009-11-29T22:08:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/theagingofaquarius.com\/ag_blog\/?p=935"},"modified":"2009-12-09T09:24:19","modified_gmt":"2009-12-09T16:24:19","slug":"over-the-meadow-and-through-the-woods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/theagingofaquarius.com\/ag_blog\/over-the-meadow-and-through-the-woods\/","title":{"rendered":"Over the meadow and through the woods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">In this story I am the grandmother and it\u2019s my house that\u2019s in the woods.\u00a0 But that wasn\u2019t where I headed for Thanksgiving.\u00a0 I drove away from\u00a0my northern California redwood forest, as I often do, to spend Thanksgiving in the city with my daughter and granddaughter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Los Angeles was warm, leaning toward hot, the whole time I was there. It\u2019s 400 miles from here to there on Interstate 5, which runs the length of California and then some.\u00a0 On my drive\u00a0south, there wasn\u2019t a cloud in the sky.\u00a0The sun was shining\u00a0and everyone I encountered along the way was feeling festive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">During my visit,\u00a0my granddaughter asked why I can\u2019t live closer to her.\u00a0 I said I wish that was possible, but I like\u00a0cooler weather.\u00a0In fact I\u00a0love my Marin County\u00a0fog belt.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Two days after Thanksgiving it was time to come home and\u00a0since it had been around 80 degrees the day before, it didn\u2019t occur to me to check the weather before leaving.\u00a0I don\u2019t like to drive in the dark, but once in a while in the pre-dawn,\u00a0when traffic is light, it\u2019s nice to get an early start.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">About 5 A.M. I headed north,\u00a0leaving the lights of Los Angeles behind as I slowly climbed the mountain toward\u00a0Fort Tejon. (For non-Californians, that\u2019s where Christo installed his giant yellow umbrellas.)\u00a0 Rain began to fall almost immediately.\u00a0The side window felt icy-cold.\u00a0I\u00a0left the Valley floor wearing a tee shirt and I didn\u2019t want to steam up the windows with the heater and besides, I thought, teeth chattering will help\u00a0me stay clear-headed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">The Grapevine &#8211; the\u00a0part of I-5 that goes over the\u00a0summit and then drops you down close to\u00a0Bakersfield &#8211; is generally picturesque.\u00a0\u00a0This time I couldn\u2019t see a thing because the rain quickly turned to snow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">It came on so fast, it was a shock.\u00a0Gusts of wind made driving a struggle.\u00a0 The lack of traffic was\u00a0a liability because there were few\u00a0taillights to follow.\u00a0 The town of Gorman at the top is about 4100 feet and I don\u2019t\u00a0remember\u00a0a Thanksgiving storm before that powdered the junction white in minutes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Snow piled\u00a0up so\u00a0the lane markers were no longer visible.\u00a0Everything was fuzzy.\u00a0I drove as slowly as possible, trying to get behind some big trucks in the right lane so they\u2019d make a path I could follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">Stopping wasn\u2019t an option.\u00a0Had I pulled over at the top, I\u2019d have been snowed in and without chains, it could have taken hours to get out.\u00a0 I said a prayer, fought the wind for control of my car, and drove on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">I sang loud to keep from getting dizzy and counted the minutes \u2019til the road begins the descent into the next Valley and\u00a0there, at the\u00a0truck stop where I like to refill my coffee,\u00a0just minutes from the blinding storm, was the bright sunshine again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">The rest of the trip was uneventful and I looked\u00a0forward to doing some Christmas decorating at home &#8211; stringing tiny lights that\u00a0glow like a fairy tale in\u00a0the northern fog.\u00a0 Except when I got home there was no fog.\u00a0 Only sunshine.\u00a0 And no fog\u00a0this morning either. And today is\u00a0warmer than normal with\u00a0a prediction of sun\u00a0all week long.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\"><span style=\"font-size: small; font-family: Verdana;\">I want my seasonal weather back. I need to get in touch with\u00a0Al Gore and see\u00a0if he can do something about this.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Verdana;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;
