I’m still unpacking in this new-to-me-hundred-year-old\u00a0house in the redwoods.\u00a0 Every now and then I climb onto a stool in the\u00a0very large kitchen, stir some cream into my coffee, \u00a0and count my blessings.\u00a0 I’ve had galley kitchens, pullman kitchens and whatever other glorified descriptions we\u00a0use for “too small.” \u00a0One of my favorite memories is of my\u00a0\u00a0first kitchen as a family lady.\u00a0 It was a\u00a0big, square room\u00a0in a very small house.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Over the years we moved\u00a0on up and up and up to modern and big and fancy – but nothing ever took my<\/em> fancy again like that\u00a0old kitchen where\u00a0my daughter’s first birthday party took place.<\/p>\n

Nothing makes home home-ier for me than a kitchen that is\u00a0the center of everything.\u00a0 Modern houses have plenty of designated spaces\u00a0for\u00a0appliances and a granite counter for homework and a breakfast nook attached, but in these old places you can’t get from\u00a0one spot to another without\u00a0 going through the kitchen and I like that fine.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In this\u00a0house the kitchen is by far the\u00a0biggest room.\u00a0\u00a0It’s not fancy, but it’s welcoming.\u00a0It has some funky\u00a0built-ins.\u00a0 A pantry and some curiously made shelves.\u00a0 Rustic? \u00a0Oh my yes.\u00a0 It takes\u00a0 special mojo to keep the pantry door closed and leveling the new fridge into its spot is a joke.\u00a0Nothing is level here.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

A side note:\u00a0 Speaking of old houses, writer, Edie Clark, shares information about her\u00a0restoration of the vintage “Mary’s Farm” in New England – with\u00a0all its attendant quirks.\u00a0 She’s featured in\u00a0Yankee Magazine as well as her own books,\u00a0and she blogs regularly at http:\/\/www.yankeemagazine.com\/blogs\/marysfarm\/<\/a>\u00a0Edie’s stories are like fairy tales\u00a0 for a Californian who loves history.\u00a0 Not the ice on the pond and the shoveling of snow followed by\u00a0the mud season, but the Currier & Ives\u00a0 pictures that make the farm look like a Christmas card all winter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Back to my old house.\u00a0 When this cottage\u00a0was built,\u00a0there weren’t ranch-style residences with a long\u00a0hallway.\u00a0 That was suburban architecture and back\u00a0then there\u00a0 weren’t suburbs.\u00a0There\u00a0were no\u00a0family rooms.\u00a0 No special acvitity spaces.\u00a0 The kitchen was the only space large enough for the family to gather – except, I guess\u00a0for\u00a0the homes of the very rich\u00a0 and their grand palaces, with which I have only a tourist’s acquaintance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I like to think this little house reflects the way many families lived in ye olden days –\u00a0tight but accommodating.\u00a0 The kitchen stayed\u00a0warm all day,\u00a0what with the cooking and the big table and the coffee and tea brewed all day long.\u00a0<\/p>\n

I’m a decent cook.\u00a0 Mostly Southern food.\u00a0 I’m\u00a0already\u00a0stewing-up and frying up a mess-a-sumthin’, but my\u00a0daughter’s\u00a0a\u00a0far more accomplished cook and I can’t wait to taste what she’ll make when she visits.\u00a0 This Old House makes a person think of things like that.\u00a0<\/p>\n
