Cinderella was the first movie I ever saw. While I watched it over and over again, my brother was in a neighboring theatre watching The Sands of Iwo Jima just as many times.\u00a0 <\/span>After leaving the theatre, the best I could do to keep the dream alive was sing those movie songs at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Of course when my own daughter came along, seeing Cinderella together was a crucial rite of passage.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Fifty years after I first saw the movie, I\u00a0recently\u00a0ordered Cinderella on\u00a0DVD for a little girl I’m fond of, but before handing it over I had to check out all the special features, including\u00a0interviews with the animation team who put the story together and the stories behind the songs. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

Did you know that’s Mike Douglas singing the role of the Prince?\u00a0 And Perry Como debuted songs from the movie on his television show even before it opened?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Finally we sat down to watch, my daughter, my three year old granddaughter and me. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Those birds and mice\u00a0still put together a heckuva ball gown.\u00a0 <\/span>The cat is still sneaky and the stepmother is still the epitome of mean.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

But oh that music!\u00a0 <\/span>The fairy tale soprano singing A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart\u00a0Makes<\/em><\/strong>,\u00a0the chirpy animals singing about “Cinderelly”<\/strong><\/em> while trying to help her get to the ball, Sing Sweet Nightingale<\/em><\/strong> at the music lesson, and t<\/span>he Prince and Cinderella dancing to So This Is Love<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

For our youngest family member, it’s the “Godmudder” who takes her fancy with the song,\u00a0Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The little girl I’m spending time with today doesn’t really want to watch <\/em>for more than a few minutes at a time. She wants to be <\/em>Cinderella.\u00a0 Cinderella is more than a movie.\u00a0 <\/span>It’s her own\u00a0personal script.\u00a0It’s that way too with Snow White and\u00a0<\/span>Sleeping Beauty and\u00a0Ariel and\u00a0Belle from Beauty & The Beast.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Their likenesses exist on every item of merchandise a little girl wears, sleeps with, eats from and carries off to preschool. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

She has her own DVD\u00a0players for the car and home.\u00a0 <\/span>Her own CD collection for the road zips\u00a0inside a\u00a0holder that looks like a ladybug and unfolds to reveal all of the traditional nursery rhymes set to music – and now the Disney soundtracks.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Her friends have Princess Parties.\u00a0 <\/span>And the Magic Kingdom has elaborate parties of their own.\u00a0 <\/span>I know one little girl who traveled from Manhattan to Disneyland with her family to attend.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In my granddaughter’s interactive world, the two words we hear most often are:\u00a0 <\/span>Pause it.\u00a0 <\/span>If we’re lucky, it’s three, Pause it please.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Pause it please.\u00a0 <\/span>Let me get my princess skirt.\u00a0 <\/span>Pause it please.\u00a0 <\/span>Let me get my tiara.\u00a0 <\/span>Pause it.\u00a0 <\/span>Magic wand.\u00a0 <\/span>Pause it.\u00a0 <\/span>Watch me dance.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>Pause it please.\u00a0 <\/span>I want to sing that song.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

When I was a girl, I could watch the princesses only on a Saturday down at the Alex Theatre.\u00a0 <\/span>Today every girl becomes<\/em> a princess.\u00a0 <\/span>Smart move, Disney.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
