I did pare down some after each parent passed but you wouldn\u2019t think so to look at the number of boxes I still have.<\/p>\n<p>Mother kept everything, not as a hoarder but as a person who knew what she had and why.\u00a0 She labeled and neatly cataloged containers.\u00a0 Did I mention there was SO MUCH stuff? I&#8217;ve already been through several rounds of decision making about what to keep, what to sell and what to donate.<\/p>\n<p>Thank goodness her songs are preserved so our family can continue sharing the music she wrote and recorded.\u00a0 Her scrapbooks have also been a valuable resource for me as a writer.\u00a0 The fact that Fern Jones was an organized keeper of things turned out to be important for future generations. We have professional help with her music <a href=\"https:\/\/numerogroup.com\/products\/fern-jones-the-glory-road\"><em><strong>(&#8220;Fern Jones: The Glory Road&#8221;)<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and song publishing and now there\u2019s a book (&#8220;<strong><em>The Glory Road: A Gospel Gypsy Life&#8221; <\/em><\/strong><em>f<\/em><em>rom University of Alabama Press, available wherever you buy books) <\/em>which shares stories and photos from her archives, all because she was a faithful and detailed keeper of things.<\/p>\n<p>The photo up top is of two small things I choose to keep nearby, representing both the happy and sad.\u00a0 The pink bowl is from her 1950s collection.\u00a0 I kept only this one piece. The little brass apple is a bell &#8211; a very loud one.\u00a0 In her home in Palm Springs, when ALS confined her to a bedroom down a long hall, for a while she was still able to ring for us. \u00a0She often rang to get one of us to put pictures of Daddy on a chest within her view.\u00a0 She liked to rotate her favorite pictures of him.<\/p>\n<p>My daughter, Cathleen Fern, has the piano her grandmother played. Fern was crazy for pink and Cath had the piano painted.\u00a0 This is an old spinet, the kind that isn\u2019t appreciating in value but provides plenty of memories at home.\u00a0 We also keep her guitar in view. It\u2019s not the best guitar Mother and Daddy owned but it\u2019s the one she played late at night while writing her songs or to comfort herself when she couldn\u2019t sleep. When my brother and I were very young and her playing woke us in the night, she\u2019d let us stay up if we\u2019d sing her favorite ballads.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theagingofaquarius.com\/ag_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/FERN-PIANO.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6173 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theagingofaquarius.com\/ag_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/FERN-PIANO.jpg?resize=250%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theagingofaquarius.com\/ag_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/FERN-PIANO.jpg?resize=250%2C300&amp;ssl=1 250w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theagingofaquarius.com\/ag_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/FERN-PIANO.jpg?w=542&amp;ssl=1 542w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 85vw, 250px\" \/><\/a>My latest decision is to take no position about what&#8217;s left, letting my daughter choose the next disposition of Jones memorabilia after I&#8217;m gone. \u00a0There\u2019s still a box filled with Daddy\u2019s Bibles.\u00a0 His briefcase, which was his preacher\u2019s traveling chapel, is here with sermon notes still inside.\u00a0 We have old photos and souvenirs from years of touring the Deep South and some of Mother\u2019s correspondence in her fancy handwriting that I\u2019ve read but then couldn\u2019t throw away. Her songs-in-progress are noted in old composition books.
