The debate about Christmas music starting too early has already begun on social media.\u00a0 I spent years on the radio and all of us on the air worked from a playlist which we didn\u2019t often get to select. Program directors and consultants and sometimes the station manager’s family decided what we played.\u00a0 That last one isn’t a joke.<\/p>\n

Just before in-earnest holiday madness began, Christmas songs were slowly merged into the playlist, but no matter when they started, someone on the air staff hated it.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Here\u2019s a scene from a typical radio programming meeting, where on-air people wrestled with the Program Director.<\/p>\n

PD: So guys \u2013 and Anita \u2013 you\u2019ll notice on your playlist that we\u2019re rotating one Christmas song each hour starting\u2026<\/p>\n

ME: \u2026Couldn\u2019t we play more than one each hour?<\/p>\n

EVERYONE ELSE: No!<\/p>\n

PD: And then by week three of the season, we\u2019ll play four an hour.<\/p>\n

ME: Couldn\u2019t we play more than that?<\/p>\n

EVERYONE ELSE: Shut up, Anita.<\/p>\n

ME: Could I have more Christmas music just on MY<\/strong><\/em> show?<\/p>\n

ON-AIR PERSON: I\u2019ll be calling in sick.<\/p>\n

ANOTHER ON-AIR PERSON: You can\u2019t call in sick, because I\u2019m scheduling all my dental work now. I\u2019ll be gone for a month.<\/p>\n

The foregoing is only slightly exaggerated. I haven\u2019t met many people who like Christmas music as much as I do.\u00a0 My personal Christmas music marathon begins when I say so and ends when I decide it ends and there are the occasional times during the year when I dip in for a song or two when I need a little Christmas.\u00a0 There have been more than a few of those dips during this particular year.<\/p>\n

It doesn’t take much to bring on the spirit.\u00a0\u00a0 I go over to You Tube and hear\u00a0 guitarist, Chris Whiteman<\/a>, play anything from his holiday collection, James Taylor<\/a> singing Joni Mitchell’s “River”\u00a0 and “In The Bleak Midwinter,”<\/a>\u00a0 (this version from “The Crown” on Netflix) Vince Guaraldi<\/a> playing anything, and on and on.\u00a0 A few favorite holiday songs and\u00a0 lights that twinkle and the holiday season is right here, right now.<\/p>\n
