Their nearly-grown son objected to every part of our life and threatened to run away from home.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the car she bought.\u00a0 That first one was an old Pontiac that got him through Hoover High School, through plenty of traffic tickets and a months-long ban from Bob&#8217;s Drive-In.\u00a0 When the rest of our family joined him in California, Leslie taught me terrifying freeway merging lessons in that Pontiac.<\/p>\n<p>The yellow car was one of several sports cars he bought on his own and drove too fast.\u00a0 Then there was a plane, then motorcycles he raced.\u00a0 Nothing slowed him down.<\/p>\n<p>This next picture was years later when we all gathered at Gramma&#8217;s for one of our Sunday suppers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theagingofaquarius.com\/ag_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/LESLIE-RAY-AND-GK-CAR-KEYS-LECTURE-RECREATED-IN-THE-60s.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4937 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theagingofaquarius.com\/ag_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/LESLIE-RAY-AND-GK-CAR-KEYS-LECTURE-RECREATED-IN-THE-60s.jpg?resize=392%2C305&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"392\" height=\"305\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theagingofaquarius.com\/ag_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/LESLIE-RAY-AND-GK-CAR-KEYS-LECTURE-RECREATED-IN-THE-60s.jpg?w=392&amp;ssl=1 392w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/theagingofaquarius.com\/ag_blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/LESLIE-RAY-AND-GK-CAR-KEYS-LECTURE-RECREATED-IN-THE-60s.jpg?resize=300%2C233&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 392px) 85vw, 392px\" \/><\/a><em><strong>Leslie Ray is reacting the way he always did<br \/>\nwhen Gramma scolded.<\/strong> <\/em><\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s re-telling the story about how many times she took his car keys away during high school and hung them on a nail in the kitchen.\u00a0 She confiscated the keys after each infraction and threatened to leave them there, but he always knew he could charm her into giving them back.<\/p>\n<p>When the nail wasn&#8217;t displaying my brother&#8217;s car keys, it was holding the old stocking that stored her\u00a0 beloved Vidalia onions.\u00a0All of us who traveled Route 66 back and forth from the South to California brought her Vidalias. Gramma added a thick slice of those sweet onions to her morning biscuits,\u00a0 a Southern tradition continued in California.
