My favorite toddler arrived for a visit, packing her portable DVD player and a stack of choices.\u00a0 Among the titles,<\/p>\n

Barbie Mariposa And Her Butterfly Fairy Friends<\/strong><\/p>\n

Where the heck did that title come from?\u00a0A visit to a Toddler Focus Group may shed some light.<\/p>\n

In the room with a\u00a0one-way window, the table and chairs have been removed.\u00a0 Twelve toddlers sit on the floor.\u00a0 They’ll\u00a0help marketing executives and manufacturers name a new product.\u00a0 No adults are allowed in.\u00a0Parents join executives looking through the glass and see that all toddlers have the perfect tool for making choices.\u00a0 Each holds onto a remote with big colorful buttons.\u00a0 Toddlers completely understand\u00a0remotes.\u00a0\u00a0 They can\u00a0delete anything\u00a0within\u00a0seconds.<\/p>\n

A voice through speakers in the room coaxes\u00a0the little ones to push buttons.\u00a0Do you like butterflies?\u00a0 They push the butterfly button.\u00a0\u00a0 Do you like fairies?\u00a0\u00a0And on through a series of questions that correspond with pictures on the remote.<\/p>\n

Oops – some of our\u00a0toddlers appear to be trying to push the buttons on a neighbor’s remote, but a few are still listening.<\/p>\n

Do you like Barbie?\u00a0\u00a0Yes.\u00a0\u00a0How about friends?\u00a0 That gets the biggest\u00a0reaction so far.\u00a0 Preschool and play-dates have already taught them that friends are the best new things of all.\u00a0 They quickly push the\u00a0button with\u00a0the colorful outline of children holding hands.<\/p>\n

Wait now.\u00a0 The group is\u00a0drifting.\u00a0 Only three toddlers are still interested in the remotes.\u00a0 The rest wander around, poking each other, getting acquainted.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0voice continues to ask about magic toddler words, but all order\u00a0has been lost and at the end of a session that only lasted five\u00a0minutes but seemed to go on forever,\u00a0advertising\u00a0people\u00a0string together a bunch of words and declare this new DVD title will contain\u00a0several\u00a0things\u00a0kids seem to like.\u00a0(How did “Mariposa” get in there?\u00a0 I’m not sure.\u00a0 I haven’t watched it yet.)\u00a0 What does the title\u00a0mean?\u00a0No one knows.\u00a0\u00a0 And does it matter, really?<\/p>\n

One very smart executive\/parent asks shouldn’t\u00a0we add ladybugs?\u00a0 Toddlers like ladybugs even more than new friends.\u00a0 Oh, all right then,\u00a0maybe next time.\u00a0 In fact let’s\u00a0commission\u00a0a script right now that includes the words Barbie and Ladybugs.<\/p>\n

Parents are allowed in.\u00a0 A few toddlers run to them,\u00a0while others act as if they’ve never seen these adults before, and continue what they were doing.\u00a0 Somebody finds a Goldfish cracker in his mommy’s purse.\u00a0\u00a0Now everybody wants one, but there aren’t any more. Crying begins. Another parent produces Cheerios from a baggie that will be\u00a0carried everywhere until the toddler starts college.\u00a0 All are pacified with the wholegrain\u00a0O’s.<\/p>\n

While the munching toddlers say goodbye or ignore each other, let’s consider a point that focus groups need to spend more time with.\u00a0 What kinds of toys do grandparents want?<\/p>\n

Here’s the Grandparent Focus Group.\u00a0 Table and\u00a0chairs\u00a0are restored and a variety of diet and regular colas, coffee, decaf, and teas in all kinds of flavors are offered.\u00a0 Treats are on a side table.\u00a0 Some of the grandparents choose M & M’s while others go for the nutrition bars.\u00a0 New toys to be tested are on the table.<\/p>\n

The voice in the speaker asks, “Does the ratchety-ratchety sound of this toy lawnmower\u00a0seem\u00a0authentic to you?”<\/p>\n

It does and is that absolutely necessary?<\/p>\n

“How about the humming noise\u00a0on this pretend-vacuum cleaner?”<\/p>\n

That is way too realistic.\u00a0\u00a0Here’s an idea.\u00a0 How about you make this toy with a grandparent control, an invisible one I can push from way over here so\u00a0the toddler can’t see it?\u00a0 When a complaint arises from the shorter person in the room, I am prepared to lie.<\/p>\n

No, honey, I have no idea why your toy stopped working just now.<\/p>\n

Question from the Market Research team:<\/p>\n

“How about this pretend-cellphone\/camera that\u00a0rings and also makes a loud clicking sound when the toddler puts it right in your face?”<\/p>\n

A hidden on\/off switch would be good.\u00a0 I’m prepared to look surprised.<\/p>\n

Oh, your cellphone won’t ring anymore?\u00a0 Really?\u00a0 I’m sure the camera still works,\u00a0honey.\u00a0 It probably doesn’t feel<\/em> like clicking every single time.<\/p>\n

And what of the sad little toddler face?<\/p>\n

Darned cellphone.\u00a0 Here, give it to Hammy.\u00a0 I’ll fix it later.\u00a0 Let’s go eat some strawberries.<\/p>\n
