I’ve watched Two And\u00a0A Half Men<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0since it began,\u00a0not because I was especially drawn to the premise but because there weren’t\u00a0many half hour sitcoms left to choose from, and that whole CBS Monday night block is\u00a0a breath of fresh air.\u00a0\u00a0The show must have tons of viewers, since Charlie\u00a0 Sheen is said\u00a0to be the highest paid actor on television.\u00a0<\/p>\n

It always did require considerable suspension of disbelief to accept\u00a0the character,\u00a0“Charlie,” as a stud.\u00a0 And boy do we get to see and hear lots of examples of his sexual conquests.\u00a0 I keep thinking maybe this show is meant for a male audience because I don’t know any women who’re drawn to that\u00a0type.\u00a0 He dresses like a little boy.\u00a0 Wears\u00a0 shorts all the time, and those\u00a0’50’s-era\u00a0bowling shirts – didn’t a costume person already put them on Kramer on Seinfeld?\u00a0 I believe that\u00a0helped establish\u00a0Kramer’s character as a kook, but I’m not sure how the costuming works with\u00a0Charlie as a sex symbol.<\/p>\n

After\u00a0years of watching (I automatically dvr CBS\u00a0on \u00a0Monday nights) I realize I’m hardly paying attention and am fast-forwarding through the meanest parts.\u00a0Then I figured out it’s\u00a0because, to me, it’s all mean.\u00a0 I gave it one more week.\u00a0 Last week I watched closely, waiting for the funny.\u00a0\u00a0I never found it.<\/p>\n

It’s not the acting.\u00a0 Charlie Sheen is a talented man.\u00a0 It’s the role and it’s the show.\u00a0 Sure, there are some good parts -good acting also from Jon Cryer as Charlie’s brother, Alan, \u00a0and Holland Taylor as the mom and Conchata Ferrell as housekeeper, Berta, but even those well-drawn characters aren’t enough to make the premise enjoyable for me.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

I’m weary of everyone picking on Alan.\u00a0 I\u00a0understand how tragedy can become comedy, how in the right hands any sad story can have its smiles, but I can’t\u00a0find the smiles here.\u00a0 Alan gets a divorce, loses his house, has to move in with his brother, Charlie, who week after week\u00a0reminds\u00a0him that he’s always been a loser.\u00a0 And then Charlie lets him know that he resents the money this whole brother-helping-brother thing is costing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Everyone makes\u00a0fun of\u00a0Alan’s son, Jake \u00a0(Angus T. Jones) who’s\u00a0portrayed as a stupid\/gross teenager.\u00a0 Does he need to be only that, all\u00a0the time?\u00a0<\/p>\n

The show is unremittingly mean and dark and instead of being funny, it’s cringe-worthy.\u00a0\u00a0Maybe it’s the times.\u00a0 Maybe it’s just me.\u00a0 I’m not in the mood these days.\u00a0 So today\u00a0I entered\u00a0“Do Not Record This Series.” I’ve still got Big Bang Theory<\/em><\/strong> and How I Met Your Mother.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
