\"\"<\/a> Mother believed her music would travel and it did, long after she was gone.\u00a0 Her song, Let Tomorrow Be,<\/strong> <\/em>recorded in Nashville in the 1950’s. traveled to HBO’s<\/strong><\/em> The Leftovers.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em>The show made poignant use of it with Fern singing over the credits. From my book, The Glory Road,<\/strong><\/em> here’s an excerpt about the song’s beginnings.<\/p>\n

The setting:\u00a0 Bogalusa, Louisiana, 1956. J<\/strong>unior is helping build a new house for the preacher and his wife. He and his wife, Marge, Brother Ray and Sister Fern are close friends during a time when white people and black people live on different sides of town.\u00a0 Junior comes over every day to work on the house and on this day, he’s trying to persuade Fern to make up her mind.<\/p>\n

**********<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Miz Jones, You got to pick a color today for the outside.\u00a0 I brought some more samples.”<\/p>\n

She glanced at them.<\/p>\n

“Not any of these.”<\/p>\n

“The painter’s needin’ to get started.\u00a0 Once he gets here, we got to pay him for the whole time every day. Can’t bring him all the way over here and…”<\/p>\n

‘I know, but these aren’t right.\u00a0 I want the house to be this color.”<\/p>\n

She patted the new chaise.<\/p>\n

“Pink?\u00a0 Miz Jones, I mean the outside.”<\/p>\n

“Yes, the outside.\u00a0 Pink outside, and a sparkly white roof, you know the kind?”<\/p>\n

“I’ve seen them.”<\/p>\n

“So pink outside and a white roof, okay?”<\/p>\n

“Okaaaay. That’s a whole lotta pink.”<\/p>\n

“Pink’s the most important color today, Junior. Everybody’s wearing pink and black.\u00a0 Elvis Presley had his picture made in a pink shirt and black jacket that looks exactly like an outfit I made to sing in. Junior can I tell you a secret?”<\/p>\n

“You like pink?”<\/p>\n

“Yes I do but this is something else. I just finished writing a new song. I’m gonna tape it and send it around to people and see if somebody famous will record it.”<\/p>\n

“Miz Jones, you oughta be recording your songs your own self.\u00a0 Nobody sings like you do.\u00a0 I oughta tell you what my Margie sez.\u00a0 No I better not.”<\/p>\n

“Oh yes, you better.”<\/p>\n

“She heard you sing on the radio Saturday morning over at WHXY and she sez, Margie sez to me…”<\/p>\n

“What?”<\/p>\n

“She sez, Junior, that’s Rev’s wife on the radio.\u00a0 I sez yes I believe it is and Margie sez, Miz Jones sings like a man.\u00a0 And then she sez…she sings like a colored man.”<\/p>\n

“No!\u00a0 She did not!”<\/p>\n

Mother put her hand over her heart.<\/p>\n

“Junior, please tell her I am honored. Do you want to hear my new song?”<\/p>\n

“Course I do.”<\/p>\n

“I got the idea from my mother.”<\/p>\n

She picked up her guitar, strummed and sang,<\/p>\n

Don’t try to cross that river that you cannot see<\/em>
\nDon’t try to tunnel through that mountain that may not be.<\/em><\/p>\n

She stopped to explain the arrangement she heard in her head.<\/p>\n

“And then backup singers come in behind me and then,”<\/p>\n

For by tomorrow all your fears<\/em>
\nMay up and slip away<\/em>
\nAll the clouds of darkness<\/em>
\nMay turn to day<\/em>
\nFor all the trouble you have feared<\/em>
\nYou’ll find there’s grace to borrow<\/em>
\nSo let tomorrow be until tomorrow<\/em><\/p>\n

Junior, always an active listener, said,<\/p>\n

“Uh huh.\u00a0 You tell it.”<\/p>\n

“What do you think?”<\/p>\n

“It’s a good one. You sure do turn a song into a lesson.”<\/p>\n

“It’s the way my songs come to me. Back when we were gettin’ our last baby
\nand I was so sick, I called up my mother and she was upset that I was
\nexpecting again but then when I told her I was scared about it she said, ‘Don’t borrow trouble.\u00a0 Let tomorrow be.'”<\/p>\n

“I don’t know how you do that.\u00a0 Write a new song good as any on the radio.”<\/p>\n

“It’s my gift from the Lord, Junior.\u00a0 All my songs will be on the radio.\u00a0 I know they will.\u201d<\/p>\n
