\"\"<\/a>As I walked away, a clerk called out, \u201cSweetie, you forgot something.\u201d Though I\u2019m older than his mother, I never let a term of endearment go by unacknowledged, so I decided he was talking to me, turned around and gave him my best smile.<\/p>\n

No matter what the speaker\u2019s intent, it\u2019s the recipient\u2019s attitude that matters.\u00a0 Even if the person doing the talking might be trying for a bit of sarcasm with the \u201cWell, sweetheart\u201d or \u201cOh sure, darlin,\u201d I choose to ignore the barb and accept it all quite literally. If you call out any one of these terms, I’ll answer to it.<\/p>\n

You know how sometimes a restaurant server addresses you with \u201cJust a minute, Hon\u201d or \u201cBe right with you, darlin\u2019,\u201d and sure it could mean \u201cWait your turn.\u00a0 I\u2019ll get to you as soon as I can,\u201d but it might also mean \u201cI call everybody Hon,\u201d leading to the best possible interpretation, which is \u201cHave I seen you here before? Well I\u2019m gonna treat you like a regular anyhow.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the conversation from last week, in a coffee shop. (I spend a lot of time in coffee shops.)<\/p>\n

My server to me: \u201cYou want coffee, Hon?\u201d\u00a0 She poured, then carried on three conversations at once.<\/p>\n

To a nearby table:\u00a0 \u201cNo, that was Doris\u2019 brother in law who moved away.\u201d<\/p>\n

One booth over: \u201cJoe was already here and gone this morning. He catches the early bus to the casino now.\u201d<\/p>\n

And to another table:\u00a0 \u201cYeah, she\u2019s learning English, studying hard, but\u00a0 somebody gave her an app so she can talk into her phone and I get her order right away.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some might object to this level of familiarity, saying these forms of address are sexist or inappropriate among people who haven\u2019t been introduced. I find this language from strangers oddly comforting. It\u2019s way better than being ignored, so you can call me Hon anytime.<\/p>\n
